How to install a doorway pull-up bar

Doorway pull-up bars come in two kinds: leverage bars that hook over the door frame trim, and telescopic bars that press or screw between the jambs. Both depend on a solid frame, so check your door frame before you hang your full weight from it.

Tools needed

  • Tape measure
  • Cross-head screwdriver
  • Pencil
  • Drill (telescopic bars with cups only)

Parts to check first

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

  • Bar with handles or foam grips
  • Door frame hooks or telescopic end caps
  • Frame pads or protectors
  • Safety mounting cups and screws (telescopic bars)

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Measure the inside width of the door frame and the depth of the trim, and check it falls within the range the bar lists.

  2. Step 2: Check the frame is solid timber or a firmly fixed frame, not hollow trim held on with a few pins, and that the trim is securely attached.

  3. Step 3: For a leverage bar: build the frame with the bolts given, then hook it over the trim on the top of the door frame with the pads resting on the wall on the other side.

  4. Step 4: For a telescopic bar: screw the safety cups to the jambs at the height you want with the screws supplied, then fit the bar between them and twist it to lengthen until it is tight.

  5. Step 5: Hang from the bar with your feet still touching the floor, then gradually lift them, watching the frame and trim for any movement.

  6. Step 6: Remove a leverage bar after each workout if it blocks the door, and recheck a telescopic bar's tightness before every session.

Common mistakes

  • Relying on friction alone for a telescopic bar without the safety cups.
  • Hooking a leverage bar over thin or loose trim that pulls away from the wall.
  • Doing kipping or swinging movements the bar is not rated for.

Safety notes

  • Respect the weight limit and do not use the bar for swinging exercises unless the manual allows it.
  • Keep children from hanging or swinging on the bar.
  • Test with partial weight every time before lifting your feet.
