How to assemble a weight bench

An adjustable weight bench carries your body weight plus whatever you are lifting, so every bolt has to be fully tight and every adjustment pin fully home. Build it on the floor where you will use it.

  • Allen keys (supplied)

Parts to check first

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

  • Main frame and front and rear legs
  • Seat pad and back pad
  • Adjustment ladder or pins
  • Leg-holder or preacher attachments
  • Bolts, nuts and washers

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Bolt the front and rear legs to the main frame with washers on both sides, snug but not fully tight.

  2. Step 2: Fit the adjustment ladder or bracket for the back pad.

  3. Step 3: Bolt on the seat pad and back pad, using the correct bolt length so they do not push through the padding.

  4. Step 4: Fit any leg-holder or preacher attachment and its pins.

  5. Step 5: Stand the bench on a flat floor, check it does not rock, then tighten every bolt fully.

  6. Step 6: Test every adjustment position with the pins fully inserted before putting weight on it.

Common mistakes

  • Using bolts that are too long for the pads, which pierce the upholstery.
  • Leaving adjustment pins half inserted.
  • Placing the bench on a slippery or uneven floor.

Safety notes

  • Never exceed the bench's rated maximum load, including your own body weight.
  • Use a spotter or a rack with safety arms for heavy presses.
