How to assemble a rowing machine
A rowing machine is usually a front unit with the flywheel and a long rail for the seat. Joining the rail to the front unit is the step that needs care, because the rail has to be straight and completely tight.

Parts to check first
Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.
- Front unit with flywheel and handle
- Rail (monorail or twin rails)
- Seat with rollers
- Rear stabiliser foot
- Footrests, straps and bolts
Step by step
Step 1: Fit the rear stabiliser foot to the end of the rail.
Step 2: Slide the seat onto the rail from the open end, the right way round (the seat's shape shows the front).
Step 3: Fit the end stop so the seat cannot roll off.
Step 4: With your helper holding the front unit, join the rail to it with the bolts, then tighten them fully.
Step 5: Fit the footrests and straps, and attach the console if it is separate.
Step 6: Check the seat runs smoothly along the whole rail and the machine does not rock.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to slide the seat on before fitting the end stop.
- Leaving the rail bolts slightly loose, which makes the rail flex.
- Letting the handle snap back into the front unit.
Safety notes
- Guide the handle back to its rest; do not let go of it mid-stroke.
- Keep fingers and children away from the flywheel housing and the seat rail.
