Reduce assembly support tickets with a video customers can follow

When a product needs assembly, a large part of support is the same few questions. A short film of the steps, sent before and after delivery, answers them before they become tickets.

In short

Self-service is far cheaper than a live contact: a Gartner poll cited by Zendesk put a live phone, chat or email contact at about $8.01 against about $0.10 for self-service. And in Wyzowl's 2026 survey, 57% of video marketers said video had helped them reduce support queries (a small survey, 266 respondents).

The fastest way to get there for assembly questions is to show the steps, not describe them again in a reply.

Find the steps people get stuck on

  • Tag assembly tickets by product and by step ("step 7, drawer runner"). Two weeks of tagging usually shows the pattern.
  • Read one- and two-star reviews for words like "instructions", "missing", "doesn't fit", "upside down".
  • Check returns marked "defective" or "damaged" where the part turned out fine: often a failed assembly.

Put the answer where the question starts

  • In the box: a QR code on the first page of the manual and on an insert card (free: our free assembly qr code tool and our free box insert card tool)
  • Before delivery: a link in the dispatch email
  • In support: a saved reply with the film, pointing to the step
  • On the product page, so buyers know it's manageable before they order

Measure it honestly

Compare assembly tickets per 100 orders for the same product before and after the film goes live, and track QR scans. No independent study gives a universal percentage for this, and we won't invent one; your own numbers are the ones that count.

Returns follow the same logic. Our guide to reducing returns with better assembly instructions covers what a return really costs and how to spot failed-assembly returns.

Questions

Which products should get a film first?+

The ones with the most assembly tickets per order, not the best sellers. A mid-selling product with a confusing step often costs more support time than a best seller.

Can support agents link to one step?+

Yes. Host the film where you can link to a timestamp (YouTube does this), and add the step times to your saved replies.

What does a film cost?+

The preview is free. A full film is $119 for a Standard film of up to 60 seconds, delivered within 24 hours, or $169 for an Express film of up to 90 seconds, first in line. Captions are included; voice-over +$12, music +$4, sound effects +$15. Prices exclude VAT.
