How to adjust cabinet door hinges

Most cabinet and wardrobe doors hang on concealed cup hinges with three adjustment screws: side to side, in and out, and up and down. A few small turns can straighten a crooked door, close an uneven gap or stop a door rubbing, without taking anything off.

Parts to check first

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

  • Concealed hinges with mounting plates
  • Door
  • Cabinet or wardrobe carcass

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Close the door and look at what is wrong: an uneven gap at the top, a door sticking out at one corner, or two doors not meeting.

  2. Step 2: Open the door and find the adjustment screws: usually the one nearest the door moves it sideways and the one further back moves it in or out.

  3. Step 3: For a gap that is wider at the top, turn the side-to-side screw on the top hinge a quarter turn, then close and check.

  4. Step 4: If a corner stands proud of the carcass, use the depth screw on that hinge until the door sits flat when closed.

  5. Step 5: For height, loosen the mounting plate screws or use the cam if your plate has one, slide the door up or down, and re-tighten.

  6. Step 6: Work in small turns, adjusting all hinges on the door together, and check the gaps again after each change.

Common mistakes

  • Loosening the screw that holds the hinge arm on, so the door drops off.
  • Making large turns on one hinge only, which twists the door.
  • Adjusting doors on a carcass that is not level; level the cabinet first.

Safety notes

  • Support a heavy or mirrored door with one hand while adjusting, as it can drop if the wrong screw is loosened.
  • Keep small children away from doors while hinges are loose.
