How to assemble a bike from the box
A boxed bike usually needs the handlebars straightened and tightened, the front wheel fitted, the pedals screwed in and the seat set. Then comes the part that matters most: checking the brakes, tyres and every bolt before the first ride.

Tools needed
- Allen keys (4, 5 and 6 mm are common)
- 15 mm pedal spanner
- Track pump with a gauge
- Torque wrench (recommended)
- Side cutters for cable ties
Parts to check first
Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.
- Frame with rear wheel
- Front wheel and quick-release skewer or thru-axle
- Handlebars and stem
- Left and right pedals
- Seat and seat post, reflectors and bell
Step by step
Step 1: Lift the bike out, cut the cable ties carefully and remove all packaging, without cutting any brake or gear cables.
Step 2: Turn the stem so it lines up with the front wheel, and fit the handlebars into the stem clamp, centred. Tighten the bolts evenly to the torque printed on the stem.
Step 3: Fit the front wheel: drop it into the fork dropouts, close the quick release firmly (it should leave a mark on your palm) or tighten the thru-axle, and check the wheel is centred.
Step 4: Reconnect the front brake if it was released for shipping, and check the disc rotor sits in the caliper without rubbing.
Step 5: Screw in the right pedal clockwise and the left pedal anticlockwise (reverse thread), then tighten both with the spanner.
Step 6: Grease the seat post, fit it to at least the minimum insertion mark and set the saddle height.
Step 7: Pump the tyres to the pressure printed on the tyre sidewall.
Step 8: Squeeze both brakes hard: the levers must stop well before the bar and the bike must not roll. Test ride slowly in a safe place.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the front quick release loose or closed like a wing nut.
- Forcing the left pedal in clockwise.
- Raising the seat post above its minimum insertion mark.
Safety notes
- Check brakes, wheel fixings and handlebar tightness before every ride for the first weeks.
- If you are not confident about brakes, have a bike shop check the bike before riding.
