How to assemble a kids' bike
A child's bike needs the same care as an adult's, with added steps: training wheels (stabilisers) set level, a chain guard in place and a seat height the child can reach the ground from.

Parts to check first
Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.
- Frame with wheels
- Handlebars
- Pedals (left and right)
- Training wheels and brackets
- Seat, chain guard, reflectors and bell
Step by step
Step 1: Fit the handlebars into the stem, line them up with the front wheel and tighten firmly.
Step 2: Fit the pedals: right pedal clockwise, left pedal anticlockwise.
Step 3: Fit the training wheels to the rear axle with their brackets outside the frame, as the manual shows.
Step 4: Set the training wheels slightly off the ground, equally on both sides, so the bike leans a little and the child learns to balance.
Step 5: Set the seat so the child can put the balls of both feet on the ground.
Step 6: Pump the tyres and check the brakes stop the wheels and the child can reach the levers.
Common mistakes
- Setting the training wheels so the rear wheel lifts off the ground.
- Handlebars not lined up with the front wheel.
- Seat too high for the child to stop with their feet.
Safety notes
- Check the brakes and wheel nuts before each ride.
- A properly fitted helmet every time.
