How to assemble a standing mirror

• Screwdriver or Allen key
• Soft blanket
• Drill and wall fixings for the anti-tip strap

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Mirror in its frame
• Back support leg or free-standing frame
• Hinges, bolts or tilt knobs
• Anti-tip strap or cord
• Felt pads

   Step 1: Lay a thick blanket on the floor and put the mirror face down on it with a helper, keeping the glass supported along its full length.

   Step 2: Fit the back leg to its hinge or the frame uprights to the mirror's pivot points, using the bolts or tilt knobs in the manual.

   Step 3: Stick felt pads on the base and feet so the mirror does not slide on hard floors.

   Step 4: With both people, lift the mirror upright by the frame, not the glass, and stand it in its final position.

   Step 5: Open the back leg to the angle the manual gives, or set the tilt on a free-standing frame and tighten the knobs.

   Step 6: Fix the anti-tip strap between the back of the frame and the wall using a fixing suited to your wall, so it cannot fall forward.

• Carrying the mirror by one edge so the frame twists and the glass cracks.
• Leaning it at too steep an angle, so a bump sends it forward.
• Skipping the anti-tip strap in a home with children or pets.
