How to install a floating shelf
A floating shelf hides its bracket inside the shelf, so all the load hangs off a bar or rods screwed to the wall. That makes the fixings everything. A level bracket in solid fixings gives a clean shelf; a weak fixing lets it droop forwards or pull out.

Parts to check first
Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

- Wall plugs if not fixing into studs
- Grub screws, if supplied
Step by step
Step 1: Scan the wall for pipes, cables and studs, and choose a height that avoids the zones directly above and below sockets and switches.
Step 2: Hold the bracket bar against the wall, level it with a spirit level, and mark every screw hole through it.
Step 3: Drill the holes at the size your fixing needs, into studs where possible, and push in wall plugs where you are fixing into masonry.
Step 4: Screw the bracket to the wall, re-checking level before the last screws are tight; a slight tilt shows badly on a long shelf.
Step 5: Slide the shelf over the rods until it sits tight to the wall, then tighten any grub screws underneath to lock it on.
Step 6: Load it gradually and check it has not tipped forwards; stay within the load rating in the manual.
Common mistakes
- Using the small plugs supplied in a plasterboard wall without a stud or proper cavity fixings.
- Drilling straight above a socket, where cables often run.
- Overloading a deep floating shelf with books far beyond its rating.

- Check for hidden cables and pipes before drilling; if in doubt, use a detector or ask a professional.
- Wear eye protection when drilling, and keep heavy or breakable items off a shelf above a bed or cot.
