How to anchor furniture to a wall

• Drill with suitable bits
• Screwdriver
• Pencil and spirit level
• Cable and pipe detector
• Wall fixings for your wall type

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Anti-tip strap or bracket (supplied)
• Screw to fix the bracket to the furniture (supplied)
• Wall plug and screw suited to the wall

   Step 1: Find out what the wall is made of: solid brick or concrete, timber stud, or plasterboard. Tap it and use a detector to find studs, cables and pipes.

   Step 2: Choose fixings for that wall: masonry plugs for brick or concrete, wood screws into a stud, or heavy-duty cavity fixings for plasterboard without a stud.

   Step 3: Fix the strap or bracket to the top rail or top panel of the furniture, in a solid part, as the manual shows.

   Step 4: Push the furniture into place and mark the wall fixing position through the bracket.

   Step 5: Move the furniture away, drill the hole, and fit the wall plug or fixing.

   Step 6: Push the furniture back and fix the strap or bracket to the wall, so there is little or no slack.

   Step 7: Pull the top of the furniture gently forward to check it is held firmly.

• Using the small plugs from the box in plasterboard, where they pull straight out.
• Fixing the bracket into a thin back panel instead of the solid top rail.
• Leaving a long slack strap that lets the furniture lean far before it stops.
