How to assemble a coffee table

• Allen key (supplied)
• Cross-head screwdriver
• Spanner if the kit uses nuts
• Spirit level (optional)

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Table top
• Four legs and any rails or apron pieces
• Lower shelf, if there is one
• Bolts, washers and hanger screws or leg plates
• Felt pads for the feet

   Step 1: Lay the table top face down on a blanket or the box so the visible surface cannot be scratched.

   Step 2: If the legs use hanger screws, screw them into the legs by hand until only the threaded part for the top sticks out.

   Step 3: Fit any rails or apron pieces between the legs first, with the bolts only finger-tight so the frame can still settle.

   Step 4: Screw each leg into its plate or bracket on the underside of the top, again only finger-tight.

   Step 5: Fit the lower shelf onto its brackets or pegs, if your table has one.

   Step 6: Turn the table over onto its feet, press down on each corner and check it stands flat without rocking.

   Step 7: Tighten all the bolts in a cross pattern, a little at a time, so the frame pulls together evenly rather than twisting.

   Step 8: Stick felt pads under the feet to protect the floor, and check again for rocking.

• Tightening the first leg fully before the others are in, which pulls the frame out of line.
• Forgetting the washers, so the bolt heads bite into the wood and loosen over time.
• Using an electric drill on the bolts and stripping the threads in the leg.
