How to assemble a mid-sleeper cabin bed

A mid-sleeper raises a child's mattress to about half the height of a bunk, with storage, a desk or a den underneath and a ladder or steps up. The guard rails, the ladder fixings and the maximum mattress depth all matter for safety.

Tools needed

  • Allen keys (supplied)
  • Cross-head screwdriver
  • Rubber mallet
  • Tape measure
  • Drill for wall anchoring

Parts to check first

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

  • Four end posts or two end frames
  • Side rails and guard rails
  • Ladder or step unit
  • Slats and centre support
  • Underbed drawers, shelves or den panels
  • Wall anchoring kit

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Sort the panels by the letter or number stickers and keep the fixings in labelled piles; mid-sleepers have many near-identical parts.

  2. Step 2: Build the two end frames flat on the floor, fitting dowels and cam locks first and turning the cams only once each panel is fully seated.

  3. Step 3: Stand the ends up with a helper and join them with the long side rails, then fit the slat supports along the inside.

  4. Step 4: Add the lower storage parts, such as the drawer runners, shelf unit or den panels, while you can still reach easily underneath.

  5. Step 5: Lay the slats and fix them as the manual shows, then bolt on every guard rail, including the one on the wall side.

  6. Step 6: Fix the ladder or steps on the side the manual allows and tighten its bolts; it must not twist when you stand on the bottom rung.

  7. Step 7: Anchor the bed to the wall with the supplied kit into a stud or with fixings suited to the wall.

  8. Step 8: Put in a mattress no deeper than the manual's maximum, then check the top of the guard rail still stands well above it.

Common mistakes

  • Using a thicker mattress than the stated maximum, which makes the guard rail too low to stop a fall.
  • Leaving out the wall-side guard rail because the bed is against a wall.
  • Letting children use the bed before every bolt is fully tightened.

Safety notes

  • Follow the maker's minimum age for the raised bed; they are not suitable for very young children.
  • Keep cords, blind pulls and belts away from the bed and guard rails, and do not hang anything from them.
  • Re-check the bolts every few months, as children climbing loosens them.
