How to assemble a loft bed

A loft bed raises the mattress high enough to fit a desk or play area underneath. It is tall and narrow, so it depends on a square frame, tight bolts and, in many designs, a fixing to the wall.

Tools needed

  • Allen key (supplied)
  • Spanner or socket set
  • Rubber mallet
  • Step ladder
  • Spirit level
  • Drill and wall fixings if the manual calls for them

Parts to check first

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

  • Four tall legs or two end frames
  • Long rails and cross rails
  • Slat base or mesh deck
  • Guard rails, ladder or stairs
  • Desk or shelf parts, if included

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Measure the ceiling height first: there must be enough space above the mattress to sit up without hitting the ceiling.

  2. Step 2: Build each end frame on the floor, fitting the cross rails between two legs with the bolts only finger-tight.

  3. Step 3: With a helper holding both ends upright, bolt the long rails between them at the height the manual shows.

  4. Step 4: Check that the frame is square and upright with a spirit level, then tighten all the bolts in a cross pattern.

  5. Step 5: Fit the slat base or deck and every centre support the manual shows.

  6. Step 6: Fit the guard rails on all open sides and the ladder or stairs, then any desk or shelves underneath.

  7. Step 7: If the manual includes a wall fixing, fix the frame to the wall with fixings that suit your wall.

  8. Step 8: Put in a mattress of the size and thickness the manual allows, and re-check all the bolts after the first week.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing a mattress that is too thick, so the guard rail no longer protects the sleeper.
  • Building on a sloping floor without levelling, which makes the frame sway.
  • Leaving out the diagonal braces or wall fixing because the bed feels steady while empty.

Safety notes

  • Loft beds are not suitable for young children; follow the minimum age in the manual.
  • Keep the bed away from ceiling fans, light fittings and windows that open inwards.
