How to assemble a divan bed base

• Cross-head screwdriver
• Spanner for headboard bolts
• Scissors

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• One or two base sections
• Feet or castors
• Link clips or joining plates
• Headboard struts and bolts (if used)
• Drawer boxes (on storage divans)

   Step 1: Unwrap the base sections carefully and tip each onto its side on a clean surface.

   Step 2: Screw the feet or castors into the plates on the underside, hand tight, and add any locking castors at the corners.

   Step 3: Stand both halves on their feet next to each other in their final place.

   Step 4: Join the halves with the link clips or plates, underneath or on the sides, so they cannot drift apart.

   Step 5: Bolt the headboard struts to the headboard, then to the fixings on the head end of the base.

   Step 6: Slide in the drawers, if the divan has them, and put the mattress on.

• Leaving the two halves unlinked, so a gap opens under the mattress.
• Using headboard bolts that are too long, which push into the base's frame and damage it.
• Putting the locking castors in the middle instead of at the corners.
