How to assemble a canopy bed frame

A canopy (four-poster) bed has a tall post at each corner joined by top rails. The bed part goes together like any frame, but the posts and the canopy are tall and awkward, so you need two people, a stepladder and a clear ceiling height before you start.

Parts to check first

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

  • Four corner posts, often in two sections each
  • Head and foot panels
  • Two side rails and a centre support
  • Canopy top rails and corner connectors
  • Slats, bolts and post caps

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Measure the room height and compare it with the finished bed height in the manual, allowing room to lift the top rails into place.

  2. Step 2: Join the post sections, if they come in two parts, with their threaded studs or sleeves, and tighten them so the joins are flush.

  3. Step 3: Bolt the head panel between two posts and the foot panel between the other two, lying each assembly flat on the floor.

  4. Step 4: Stand the head end up with one person holding it, and bolt on both side rails; then lift and bolt the foot end to the rails.

  5. Step 5: Fit the centre support and slats, then square the frame by matching the diagonals before tightening the rail bolts.

  6. Step 6: From a stepladder, fit the top rails between the posts one side at a time, using the corner connectors, with the helper holding the far end.

  7. Step 7: Tighten all top-rail bolts only once all four are in, so the posts pull upright together.

  8. Step 8: Screw on the post caps and push each post; any sway usually means a lower bolt is still loose.

Common mistakes

  • Tightening the top rails before the frame below is square, which leaves the posts leaning.
  • Hanging heavy curtains or fabric beyond what the canopy rails are rated for.
  • Building the bed in the middle of the room and then finding the posts will not clear a ceiling light.

Safety notes

  • Use a stable stepladder, not the bed frame or a chair, to reach the top rails.
  • Keep the canopy clear of ceiling lights and heaters, and never let children climb the posts or hang from the rails.
