How to install a closet organizer system

• Drill and bits
• Stud finder or detector
• Spirit level (long)
• Tape measure
• Pencil
• Hacksaw if rails need cutting

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Top hanging rail
• Vertical standards
• Shelf brackets and shelves
• Hanging rods and rod brackets
• Screws, wall anchors and end caps

   Step 1: Empty the closet, measure its width, depth and height, and sketch a layout with long hanging, double hanging and shelf zones.

   Step 2: Locate and mark the studs across the back wall at the height the top rail will sit.

   Step 3: Draw a level line, screw the top rail into every stud it crosses, and use rated anchors only where the manual allows between studs.

   Step 4: Hang the vertical standards from the rail at the spacings in your layout, checking each one is plumb.

   Step 5: Clip in the shelf brackets and rod brackets at your chosen heights, then fit the shelves and cut rods to length if needed.

   Step 6: Add baskets and accessories, then load it gradually and check the top rail has not pulled away from the wall.

• Fixing the top rail only into plasterboard with light plugs, so it pulls out under clothes.
• Setting double-hanging rods too close, so shirts drag on the lower rail.
• Measuring once and cutting rods too short.
