How to install a wall-mounted coat rack

• Drill and bits
• Stud finder or detector
• Spirit level
• Tape measure
• Pencil
• Screwdriver

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Hook rail or board
• Hooks, if fitted separately
• Screws
• Wall plugs or cavity fixings
• Screw covers or caps

   Step 1: Choose a height that lets the longest coat hang clear of the floor, and check there is room for a door to swing past.

   Step 2: Scan the wall for cables, pipes and studs, and plan the rack so at least two fixing holes land on studs where possible.

   Step 3: Hold the rail against the wall, level it, and mark the holes through the pre-drilled positions.

   Step 4: Drill the holes; use wall plugs in masonry or heavy-duty cavity fixings in plasterboard where a stud cannot be reached.

   Step 5: Screw the rail to the wall, re-check level, then fit any separate hooks and screw covers.

   Step 6: Hang a heavy coat on each end hook and check the rail does not move before loading it fully.

• Using only the supplied light plugs in plasterboard, so the rack pulls out under wet coats.
• Mounting the rack at eye height, where hooks can catch faces.
• Drilling beside a light switch where cables run vertically.
