How to convert a crib to a toddler bed

• Allen key (supplied)
• Cross-head screwdriver

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• The existing crib
• The maker's toddler guard rail or conversion kit
• Bolts supplied with the kit
• The crib's original firm mattress

   Step 1: Check that your crib model is sold as convertible and that you have the matching kit; do not use parts from another bed.

   Step 2: Take the mattress out and lower the base to the position the manual gives for toddler bed use, usually the lowest.

   Step 3: Unbolt the side that will become the open side and keep it with the old fittings, labelled, in case you convert back.

   Step 4: Bolt the toddler guard rail on at the head end of the open side as the kit shows, tightening each bolt fully.

   Step 5: Tighten every other bolt on the crib and push on the frame to check it is rigid with one side off.

   Step 6: Put the same firm mattress back and check it still fits with no gap at the sides or ends.

   Step 7: Clear the floor around the bed and remove anything your child could use to climb or pull over.

• Converting with a guard rail made for a different bed.
• Leaving the base at a higher setting, so a roll out is a bigger drop.
• Losing the removed side's bolts, which are often unique to the crib.
