How to assemble a crib

• Allen key (supplied)
• Cross-head screwdriver
• Tape measure

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Head and foot ends
• Two sides
• Base (mattress support) and its brackets
• Bolts, barrel nuts and any teething rail covers
• The crib's own manual with the mattress size

   Step 1: Check that every part is present and undamaged: no cracked slats, splinters or missing bolts. Do not use a crib with missing parts.

   Step 2: Fit the base brackets to the head and foot ends at the highest position for a newborn, or the height the manual gives for your child's age.

   Step 3: Join one side to the head and foot ends with its bolts, finger-tight, then the second side.

   Step 4: Drop the base onto its brackets and bolt it in place.

   Step 5: Tighten every bolt fully and check the crib does not rock or rack when pushed.

   Step 6: Put in a firm mattress of the size the manual gives. There should be no gap bigger than about two fingers between the mattress edge and the crib sides.

   Step 7: Lower the base to its lowest position as soon as your child can sit or pull up, and re-check all bolts regularly.

• Using a mattress smaller than the crib, which leaves gaps a baby can get trapped in.
• Adding bumpers, pillows or loose bedding, which safe-sleep guidance advises against.
• Keeping the base at the top position once the baby can pull up to stand.
