How to assemble a toddler bed
A toddler bed is low, uses a crib-size mattress and has side rails to stop a child rolling out. It is quick to build, but the guard rails and the mattress fit matter just as much as they do in a crib.

Parts to check first
Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.
- Head and foot ends
- Side rails
- Guard rails
- Slats or base board
- Bolts and barrel nuts
Step by step
Step 1: Lay out the parts and check for damage or sharp edges.
Step 2: Join the side rails to the head and foot ends with their bolts, finger-tight.
Step 3: Fit the slats or base board, fixing each slat into its holder so none can lift out.
Step 4: Fit the guard rails on both sides, or on the open side if the bed stands against a wall and the manual allows it.
Step 5: Tighten all bolts firmly and check for wobble.
Step 6: Put in a mattress of the size the manual gives, with no large gaps at the sides or ends.
Common mistakes
- Using a mattress that leaves a gap at the head or foot end.
- Placing the bed next to a window or blind cord.
- Leaving the guard rail off because the child is 'too big' for it.
Safety notes
- Keep the area around the bed free of cords, heaters and furniture a child could climb onto.
- Check the bolts regularly; children bounce on beds.
