How to assemble an over-the-toilet storage unit

• Cross-head screwdriver
• Spirit level
• Drill and bits for tiles or plasterboard
• Masking tape
• Wall fixings to suit your wall

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Two long side legs or frames
• Shelves or cabinet section
• Cross braces
• Anti-tip bracket or wall strap
• Screws and plastic feet

   Step 1: Measure the width of the toilet cistern and the height to the top of it so the lowest shelf will clear the lid when it is raised.

   Step 2: Screw the shelves or cabinet section between the two side legs with the edge lips facing up, loosely at first.

   Step 3: Add the cross braces at the back, then tighten all screws so the legs are parallel and the frame is square.

   Step 4: Stand the unit over the toilet and adjust the feet until it is level and not resting on the cistern or pipes.

   Step 5: Mark the wall fixing position; on tiles, put masking tape over the spot and drill slowly with a tile bit to stop cracking.

   Step 6: Fix the bracket or strap to the wall, avoiding pipes behind the cistern, and connect it to the unit.

• Setting the lowest shelf too low, so the toilet lid cannot open.
• Drilling blind behind the cistern where water pipes run.
• Leaving the unit freestanding on a slippery floor.
