How to assemble an art easel

• Screwdriver or Allen key (if supplied)
• Soft cloth to protect the finish

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Central mast with height track
• Two front legs and hinged rear leg
• Canvas tray (ledge)
• Top canvas clamp
• Bolts, wing nuts and a stop chain or brace

   Step 1: Lay the parts on a soft cloth and identify the front legs, the rear leg and the mast by the holes and hinges shown in the manual.

   Step 2: Bolt the two front legs to the top block of the mast, fitting washers under the wing nuts and leaving them slightly loose.

   Step 3: Attach the rear leg to its hinge at the top so it can swing out behind the easel.

   Step 4: Slide the canvas tray onto the front legs or mast at a comfortable working height and lock it with its wing nut.

   Step 5: Fit the top clamp on the mast so it can slide down onto the top edge of a canvas.

   Step 6: Stand the easel up, spread the rear leg to the angle you want, and fit the stop chain or brace so the leg cannot slide further out.

   Step 7: Tighten every wing nut firmly, place a canvas on the tray and bring the clamp down to hold it.

• Forgetting the chain or brace, so the rear leg slides out under pressure.
• Overtightening wing nuts into soft wood and crushing it.
• Setting the tray so high the easel becomes top-heavy.
