How to assemble a basketball hoop
A portable basketball hoop stands on a hollow base that you fill with water or sand, with a pole, a backboard and a height adjuster. The ballast is what keeps it standing, so fill it as the manual says, and check the height mechanism locks before anyone plays.

Parts to check first
Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

Step by step
Step 1: Choose a level spot with plenty of clear space around the base and nothing overhead, such as cables or branches.
Step 2: Fit the wheels to the base and bolt the lowest pole section to it with the support brace.
Step 3: Tap the pole sections together with the mallet, lining up the bolt holes, and bolt them.
Step 4: Assemble the backboard frame, the rim and the adjuster arms on the ground on cardboard.
Step 5: With two people and a ladder, lift the backboard assembly onto the pole and bolt the arms in place.
Step 6: Fill the base with water or sand to the level the manual gives, and fit the cap. Add antifreeze only if the manual allows it.
Step 7: Set the height, check the adjuster locks, and fit the net.
Common mistakes
- Standing the hoop up before the base is filled.
- Overfilling or underfilling the base against the manual.
- Leaving the height adjuster unlocked.
Safety notes
- Never climb or hang on the rim unless it is a breakaway rim rated for it.
- Fill the ballast as the manual says before play; an unfilled base can tip over.
- Use a stable ladder and two people for the backboard; it is heavy and awkward.
