How to assemble a sectional sofa

A sectional sofa comes as separate modules, usually a corner, one or more middle seats and a chaise, joined by metal connector brackets underneath. Fitting the feet is quick; the key is deciding the layout first and getting every connector engaged so the sections do not drift apart.

  • Allen key or spanner (supplied)
  • Tape measure
  • Torch

Parts to check first

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

  • Corner, middle and chaise or end modules
  • Sofa feet
  • Section connector brackets
  • Back and seat cushions
  • Bolts and washers for the connectors

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Measure the room and doorways, and decide which side the chaise or corner goes before unboxing everything.

  2. Step 2: Tip each module on its back on a blanket and screw in its feet, keeping any taller or glide feet where the manual shows.

  3. Step 3: Screw the connector brackets to the frame bottoms if they are not pre-fitted, with the hooks facing the adjoining module.

  4. Step 4: Stand the corner module in place first, then bring each neighbouring module alongside it, lifting slightly so the hooks drop into each other.

  5. Step 5: Check under the joints with a torch that every connector is fully engaged, then push the run together until there is no gap.

  6. Step 6: Place the seat and back cushions, matching any zipped or labelled cushions to their module.

Common mistakes

  • Building the sofa in the wrong hand, so the chaise faces the wall.
  • Pushing modules together without lifting, so the connectors ride on top instead of hooking.
  • Carrying modules by the arms or back cushions instead of the frame.

Safety notes

  • Corner modules are heavy and awkward; carry them with two people and plan the route through doors first.
  • Keep fingers out of the gap as the connectors drop into place.
