How to assemble a garage storage cabinet

• Cross-head screwdriver
• Spanner or socket set
• Spirit level
• Drill and masonry bits
• Work gloves

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Side, top, bottom and back panels
• Two doors with hinges and lock
• Adjustable shelves and shelf clips
• Levelling feet
• Bolts, nuts and wall brackets

   Step 1: Wear gloves when unpacking; pressed steel panels can have sharp edges and corners.

   Step 2: Bolt the bottom panel to both sides with the levelling feet already screwed into the base.

   Step 3: Add the top and back panels, leaving the nuts finger tight until every panel is in place, then tighten from the bottom up.

   Step 4: Stand the cabinet against the wall and adjust the levelling feet until it is level side to side and front to back.

   Step 5: Fix the wall brackets into masonry with suitable plugs and screws, or into studs on a timber wall.

   Step 6: Hang the doors on their hinges and adjust them until they meet evenly and the lock catches.

   Step 7: Clip the shelves in at the heights you need, keeping the heaviest items on the lowest shelf.

• Levelling with packing under one corner instead of the feet, so the cabinet rocks later.
• Tightening each panel as it goes on, which prevents the next panel lining up.
• Storing paint tins or tools high up, making the cabinet top-heavy.
