How to install a washing machine

• Spanner or the transit-bolt tool (supplied)
• Spirit level
• Adjustable spanner
• Towel and bucket

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Washing machine
• Transit bolts and blanking caps
• Cold fill hose with washers
• Drain hose and U-bend hook
• Levelling feet

   Step 1: Walk the machine to its place on a trolley or with a helper, keeping it upright, and leave the transit bolts in until it is there.

   Step 2: Undo the transit bolts at the back with the spanner, pull out the bolts and any plastic spacers, and press in the blanking caps. Keep the bolts for any future move.

   Step 3: Check the rubber washers are in both ends of the fill hose, then screw it onto the machine's inlet and the cold valve hand-tight plus a quarter turn.

   Step 4: Hook the drain hose into the standpipe or sink trap connection at the height the manual gives, and secure it so it cannot pop out during a spin.

   Step 5: Plug into a wall socket, not an extension lead, and push the machine back without kinking either hose.

   Step 6: Put the spirit level on top front-to-back and side-to-side and wind the feet until it sits level and does not rock, then lock the foot nuts.

   Step 7: Turn the valve on and look for drips at both hose ends.

   Step 8: Run an empty rinse or short hot wash and watch the drain connection and the floor during filling and the spin.

• Running the machine with the transit bolts still in.
• Losing or skipping the rubber washer in the fill hose, which leaks.
• Pushing the drain hose too far into the standpipe, which can siphon water out while filling.
