How to install a tumble dryer vent hose

• Cross-head screwdriver
• Tape measure
• Scissors or snips for the hose

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Flexible vent hose
• Hose adaptor for the dryer outlet
• Hose clips
• Wall vent or window vent kit

   Step 1: Unplug the dryer and pull it out far enough to reach the outlet on the back.

   Step 2: Measure the shortest route from the outlet to the wall vent or window and cut the hose to that length plus a little slack, with no loops.

   Step 3: Push the adaptor onto the dryer outlet and fit the hose over it, holding it with a hose clip.

   Step 4: Fit the other end over the wall vent spigot or window kit and clip it; the flap on the outside vent should open freely when air blows.

   Step 5: Push the dryer back slowly, watching that the hose is not squashed flat against the wall or bent into a sharp kink.

   Step 6: Plug in and run the dryer briefly on heat, then check warm air is coming out of the outside vent and not at the joints.

   Step 7: Clean the lint filter after every load and check the hose for lint build-up every few months.

• Venting into a cupboard, loft or wall cavity instead of outside.
• Using a hose far longer than needed, coiled behind the dryer.
• Taping joints with ordinary tape that dries out and falls off.
