How to fit a cooker anti-tip bracket

• Drill with masonry and wood bits
• Cross-head screwdriver
• Tape measure
• Pencil and torch

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Anti-tip bracket or stability chain and hook
• Screws and plugs for your floor or wall
• Template from the cooker manual, if supplied

   Step 1: Switch the cooker off, turn off the gas supply tap if it is a gas cooker, and let it cool fully before you move it.

   Step 2: With a helper, slide the cooker out far enough to work behind it without stretching the gas hose or power cable.

   Step 3: Find the bracket position from the manual's template or measurements; it has to line up with the rear foot or the hook point on the back of the cooker.

   Step 4: Check for pipes and cables where you will drill, then mark and drill the holes in the floor or wall.

   Step 5: Fix the bracket or chain hook firmly with the right screws and plugs for the surface.

   Step 6: Slide the cooker back so the rear foot goes fully under the bracket, or clip the chain on with only a little slack.

   Step 7: Level the cooker with its feet, then open the oven door and press down gently on it to confirm the bracket stops the cooker lifting.

   Step 8: If it is a gas cooker, turn the supply back on and check the hose joints with soapy water for bubbles before lighting.

• Fitting the bracket where the rear foot misses it once the cooker is pushed back.
• Leaving so much slack in a stability chain that the cooker can still tip.
• Kinking or stretching the gas hose while the cooker is pulled out.
