How to reverse a fridge door
Most freestanding fridges and fridge-freezers let you swap the door to open from the other side. The hinges move across, blanking caps swap over and the handles change sides. Doors are heavy and the hinge pins are small, so lay everything out in order as you go.

Tools needed
- Cross-head screwdriver
- Socket or spanner set
- Flat-head screwdriver for covers
- Masking tape and a tray for screws
Parts to check first
Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.
- Top, middle and bottom hinges
- Hinge pins and spacers
- Blanking caps and hinge covers
- Door handles and their screws
Step by step
Step 1: Switch the fridge off at the socket, empty the door shelves and tape the doors closed so they cannot swing while you work.
Step 2: Prise off the top hinge cover, undo the top hinge and lift the top door off its middle hinge pin with a helper holding it.
Step 3: Undo the middle hinge, lift off the lower door, then tip the fridge back slightly with a helper to reach and remove the bottom hinge.
Step 4: Swap the blanking caps from the new hinge side to the old one, and move the hinge-pin bushes and door stops on each door to the opposite corner.
Step 5: Fit the bottom hinge on the new side, hang the lower door on it, then fit the middle hinge through the top of the lower door.
Step 6: Hang the top door and fit the top hinge, holding the door aligned with the cabinet while you tighten.
Step 7: Move the handles across, filling the old holes with the supplied caps.
Step 8: Close both doors and check the seals touch all the way round; adjust hinge position or the front feet so the doors close by themselves.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to move the door stop or pin bush, so the door will not sit on its hinge.
- Tipping the fridge far over, which can disturb the compressor oil; tilt it only slightly and let it stand before switching on.
- Mixing up screws of different lengths between hinges and handles.
Safety notes
- Unplug the fridge before starting.
- Have a helper hold each door; a full-height door is heavy and awkward.
- Follow the manual on how long to leave the fridge upright before plugging it back in after tilting.
