How to assemble a hammock stand

• Tape measure
• Spanner or Allen key (if bolts are supplied)
• Work gloves

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Centre base section(s)
• Two end arms with hooks or chains
• Feet or end caps
• Locking pins, knobs or bolts
• S-hooks or chains for the hammock

   Step 1: Choose a flat, firm area with clear space around both ends and no slope, so the stand cannot rock when someone climbs in.

   Step 2: Join the centre base sections if yours comes in parts, lining up the holes and fitting the locking pins or bolts.

   Step 3: Slide an end arm into each end of the base with the curve rising upward and the hooks pointing inward, then secure each with its knob, pin or bolt.

   Step 4: Fit the feet or end caps so the stand sits flat, and check it does not rock from corner to corner.

   Step 5: Measure your hammock from end loop to end loop and set the arm or chain positions the manual recommends for that length.

   Step 6: Hang the hammock with the S-hooks or chains, adjusting so it has a gentle curve and its lowest point sits clear of the base beam when loaded.

   Step 7: Test it by sitting in the middle first and adding weight slowly, then check every knob and pin again.

• Hanging a hammock that is too long or too short for the stand, so it bottoms out on the base.
• Setting the stand on sloping or soft ground.
• Leaving a locking knob only half tightened.
