How to assemble an adjustable bed base

An adjustable base has motors that raise the head and foot sections from a remote. Most arrive almost fully built, so the work is fitting the legs, connecting the power and remote, and checking nothing is trapped when the sections move.

Tools needed

  • Box cutter used with care
  • Spanner or Allen key (supplied)
  • Tape measure

Parts to check first

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

  • Base with motors fitted
  • Legs
  • Power supply and cable
  • Remote control and batteries
  • Mattress retainer bar

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Cut only the outer packaging straps and lift the base out with two people, keeping it flat; it is heavy and the motors sit underneath.

  2. Step 2: Flip it with care onto a rug or cardboard with the underside up and screw the legs in by hand until each one is fully seated.

  3. Step 3: Turn the base back upright and place it where it will live, leaving the gap to the wall the manual gives so the head section can move.

  4. Step 4: Plug the power supply into the base and into a wall socket; do not use a long extension lead or run the cable under the base where it can be pinched.

  5. Step 5: Pair the remote as the manual says and run the head and foot sections up and down once with no mattress on.

  6. Step 6: Watch and listen for cables, straps or packaging caught in the mechanism during that first run.

  7. Step 7: Lay the mattress on in the flat position and fit the retainer bar at the foot so it cannot slide.

  8. Step 8: Find the manual lowering method for a power cut, such as a battery backup, and fit its batteries now.

Common mistakes

  • Placing the base tight to the wall, so the head section hits it as it rises.
  • Using a mattress the maker says is not suitable for an adjustable base.
  • Letting the power cable run under the frame where the moving parts can crush it.

Safety notes

  • Keep children and pets out from under the base, and never let them play with the remote; moving sections can trap fingers.
  • Unplug the base before reaching under it or moving it.
