How to assemble a standing desk

An electric standing desk is a steel frame with motorised legs, a control box and a desktop. The frame is heavy and the cables must be routed so they never pull or pinch when the desk moves up and down.

Tools needed

  • Allen key (supplied)
  • Cross-head screwdriver or cordless driver with a clutch
  • Tape measure
  • Cable ties

Parts to check first

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

  • Two lifting legs and feet
  • Adjustable cross beam
  • Side brackets
  • Control box, handset and cables
  • Desktop and wood screws

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Lay the desktop upside down on a soft surface, bigger than the frame.

  2. Step 2: Extend the cross beam to fit the desktop's width and lock it with its screws.

  3. Step 3: Bolt the legs to the ends of the cross beam, then the feet to the bottom of the legs.

  4. Step 4: Place the frame upside down on the desktop, centred, and screw it on through the side brackets. Use a low clutch setting so the screws do not strip the board.

  5. Step 5: Screw the control box and handset to the underside, near the front edge where you want the buttons.

  6. Step 6: Plug the motor cables and handset into the control box, and tidy the cables with ties so none hang loose.

  7. Step 7: With your helper, turn the desk over onto its feet. Lift it, never drag it on two legs.

  8. Step 8: Plug in the power, run the reset or calibration routine from the manual, and test the full height range.

Common mistakes

  • Driving screws through the desktop by using the wrong length or too much force.
  • Leaving cables loose so they catch when the desk moves.
  • Skipping the reset routine, so the legs move out of sync.

Safety notes

  • Keep the space above and below the desk clear before moving it; motorised desks can crush objects and fingers.
  • Keep power and data cables long enough for the highest position, and away from the lifting legs.
