How to assemble a filing cabinet
Flat-pack filing cabinets and mobile pedestals need their drawers fitted on full runners that carry heavy paper. The interlock that stops more than one drawer opening at once is a safety feature, not an extra.

Parts to check first
Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.
- Carcass panels
- Drawer boxes and fronts
- Drawer runners and file rails
- Castors or feet
- Lock, interlock parts and anti-tip fitting
Step by step
Step 1: Fit the runners to the carcass sides while they lie flat, checking left from right.
Step 2: Build the carcass on its back and square it before fitting the back panel.
Step 3: Fit the castors or feet to the base, with the locking castors at the front.
Step 4: Build the drawers, add the file hanging rails and fit the drawer runners.
Step 5: Fit the lock and the interlock parts exactly as the manual shows, then slide in the drawers.
Step 6: Test that only one drawer opens at a time, and fix tall cabinets to the wall.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out the interlock, so several full drawers can open together and tip the cabinet.
- Putting the locking castors at the back where you cannot reach them.
- Loading the top drawer with the heaviest files.
Safety notes
- Fill filing cabinets from the bottom drawer up and open one drawer at a time.
- Fix tall filing cabinets to the wall or to each other.
