How to assemble a gas grill

• Cross-head screwdriver
• Spanner or adjustable wrench
• Small brush and a cup of soapy water
• Work gloves

Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

• Cart sides, base panel and wheels
• Firebox with burners and control knobs
• Side shelves and lid
• Cooking grates and flame tamers
• Hose, regulator and hose clips

   Step 1: Build the cart: sides to the base panel, then the wheels and the back panel, keeping bolts snug but not fully tight.

   Step 2: With a helper, lift the firebox onto the cart and bolt it in place, then tighten the whole cart.

   Step 3: Fit the side shelves, handles and any side burner.

   Step 4: Check the burners sit correctly over the gas valve outlets, then fit the flame tamers and cooking grates.

   Step 5: Connect the hose and regulator to the gas cylinder and the grill, using a regulator suited to your gas type.

   Step 6: Leak test: with all knobs off, open the cylinder valve and brush soapy water on every joint. Bubbles mean a leak: close the gas and fix it before use.

   Step 7: Light the grill with the lid open, following the manual, and run it for 15 to 20 minutes to burn off manufacturing oils.

• Skipping the leak test.
• Fitting the burners so they miss the valve outlets, which gives an uneven or yellow flame.
• Lighting the grill with the lid closed.
