How to assemble a raised garden bed
Raised garden beds come as timber boards with corner posts or as corrugated metal panels bolted together. The build is simple; the effort goes into a level site and filling it, which is where most of the weight comes from.

Parts to check first
Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.
- Side boards or metal panels
- Corner posts or brackets
- Screws or bolts, nuts and washers
- Edge trim (for metal beds)
- Weed membrane (optional)
Step by step
Step 1: Mark out the bed's position in a sunny spot and clear the turf and weeds.
Step 2: Level the ground where the edges will sit, so the bed does not twist when filled.
Step 3: Join the sides to the corner posts or brackets, bolts finger-tight, working around the bed.
Step 4: Check the bed is square with the diagonals and level with a spirit level, then tighten all fixings.
Step 5: Fit the edge trim on metal beds to cover the sharp top edges.
Step 6: Lay weed membrane or cardboard in the bottom if you want, then fill with soil in layers, firming each one.
Common mistakes
- Building on uneven ground so the sides bow out when filled.
- Leaving the sharp top edge of metal panels without trim.
- Filling with soil alone and no drainage on heavy clay.
Safety notes
- Wear gloves; cut metal edges are sharp.
- Lift and move soil in small loads to protect your back.
