How to install a video doorbell
A video doorbell either runs on a rechargeable battery or is wired into the existing low-voltage doorbell circuit and transformer. Battery ones just screw to the frame. Wired ones need the power off at the breaker first: even though the doorbell wires are low voltage, the transformer feeding them is on the mains.

Parts to check first
Before you start, lay everything out on a soft surface (the flattened box works) and check it against the parts list in your manual.

- Wedge or angle kit
- Screws and plugs
- Wire extensions and connectors (wired models)
- Chime adaptor, if supplied
Step by step
Step 1: Charge the battery, or for a wired model check the existing transformer's voltage against what the doorbell needs.
Step 2: Set up the doorbell in its app and check your Wi-Fi signal at the front door before you fix anything.
Step 3: For a wired model, switch off the doorbell circuit at the breaker, then remove the old push button and confirm the wires are dead with a tester.
Step 4: Fit the chime adaptor inside the indoor chime if the manual calls for one, following its diagram.
Step 5: Hold the mounting plate at about chest height, use the wedge if the camera needs angling, and mark and drill the holes.
Step 6: Connect the two doorbell wires to the terminals on the back (low-voltage doorbell wires have no polarity on most models) and screw the plate on.
Step 7: Clip the doorbell onto the plate and fit the security screw.
Step 8: Turn the breaker back on, press the button, and check the chime rings and the live view works in the app.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the breaker on because doorbell wires are low voltage; the transformer is still mains-powered.
- Installing before checking the Wi-Fi reaches the door.
- Pointing the camera so it records a neighbour's property or the public street more than needed.
